Tradition Reinvented -
Taking inspiration from the throwback aesthetics and modeling styles of the 80s-90s, I created a shoe that would encapsulate the emotion that comes with that while retaining style cues of today.
Pulling Inspiration
Gathering early sneaker methods with the phylon midsole tooling and waffle sole grounded the design in the nostalgic aesthetic. As well as pulling inspiration from the leather paneling to the extreme.
Key points came down to :
Designing the midsole as a larger unit to reflect current ‘bulky-ness’ style.
Mixture of both webbing and leather on the upper in layered panels.
Creating a center-piece for the waffle sole to be shown.
Sketching
With the general idea of an ankle high running-style sneaker as the base I created 6 rough sketches dwindling down to the final. Using and focusing on different key points I had came up with.
3D Modeling
With the ability to digitally flesh out the shoe, 3D modeling allowed for complete understanding of how the shoe will look within real world space. As well as seeing the limitations of what the design was initially drawn with.
Colorways
Deciding on colorways is always challenging for creating a concise representation of the shoe. So with that in mind I created three different colorways that would help show off aspects of the shoe.
First with OGRE the pink and green tones accents each other and create a natural colorway. The dark browns and blacks add contrast and frames the other colors/elements within the shoe.
WPO was completely inspired by the Joker. Looking back on the comic art and patina achieved through old age and wear help bring oranges while purple, greens and whiles speaks to the enduring colors of the joker. Used in the simplistic way of his suite the colorway is based in strong color blocks.
BW provided a stark contrast with only two colors. Rather than mix both into a homogenous palette, strong color blocking was used as well to push contrast to the extreme.
